The Kano State Films and Censorship Board has announced a statewide suspension of films depicting “thuggery and cross-dressing,” citing concerns over their impact on cultural values.
The move comes after a surge in complaints from Kano residents, according to a press release signed by Kano Censorship Board media officer Abdullah Sani Sulaiman. The Board met with representatives of Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry, before issuing the directive.
Executive Secretary Abba El-Mustapha emphasized the Board’s legal authority to regulate films and its commitment to protecting Kano’s cultural identity. “These films corrupt the morals of the Kano people,” El-Mustapha declared.
He expressed gratitude to residents for reporting content deemed offensive to Islamic and cultural principles. El-Mustapha pledged continued openness to public input and collaboration in safeguarding Kano’s cultural integrity.
