During a ministerial press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, announced the government’s initiatives to tackle the issue of unmetered customers in the country.
Speaking at the event organized by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Adelabu revealed the implementation of the Presidential Meter Initiative (PMI) aimed at reducing the meter gap.
Highlighting the significance of the PMI, Adelabu stated, “There is also the Presidential Meter Initiative (PMI) put in place to ensure that the meter gap is addressed.”
He emphasized the initiative’s role in providing real-time data to identify ideal locations for renewable energy projects, facilitating investment decisions.
Furthermore, Adelabu emphasized the government’s commitment to liberalizing the electricity value chain and integrating renewable energy.
“We have developed legal frameworks that have liberalized the entire electricity value chain, integrated renewable energy,” he affirmed.
In addition to these efforts, Adelabu highlighted the success of programs initiated by the Rural Electrification Agency, which have provided financing opportunities for private sector-driven interconnected and off-grid project delivery.
The announcement comes in the wake of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) recent approval of a tariff increase for Band A customers. Band A customers, who receive 20 to 24 hours of power supply, represent a significant segment of electricity consumers in the country.
