Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has called for diplomatic support from the Netherlands to enhance agricultural production and address climate change impacts in the region.
Governor Yusuf announced this proposed collaboration on Tuesday during a meeting with Ms. Eva De Wit, First Secretary for Migration at the Dutch Embassy in Nigeria. The meeting highlighted the Netherlands’ achievements in agriculture and climate change mitigation, with Governor Yusuf expressing admiration for their progress and a desire to replicate their success in Kano.
In a statement from his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, Governor Yusuf underscored the importance of leveraging Dutch expertise to drive agricultural growth and sustainability in Kano. He emphasized the state’s commitment to youth productivity and food security as key areas for potential collaboration.
During the meeting, Governor Yusuf detailed various initiatives launched by his administration to empower Kano’s youth and enhance food security. These include reopening 24 skill acquisition centers and reforming 713 youths previously involved in thuggery, in collaboration with the Nigerian Police, to reduce restiveness and drug abuse.
Ms. De Wit, accompanied by Mr. Laurent De Boeck, Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration, pledged Dutch support in youth empowerment, food security, and climate change mitigation, reinforcing the potential for a fruitful partnership between Kano State and the Netherlands.
