Tensions are high in Gaya as protesters flood the streets in response to the recent repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law, which has led to significant political upheaval.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-controlled House of Assembly repealed the law that former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had used in 2020 to dethrone Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II and create four new emirates.
On Thursday, Governor Abba Yusuf signed the repeal into law, dissolving the additional emirates of Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi. The governor instructed all monarchs, including Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, Emir of Gaya, to transfer their authority to Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor overseeing the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The Emir of Gaya reportedly vacated his palace at midnight on Thursday, amid a heavy security presence. Despite the lack of immediate violence, some residents expressed dissatisfaction with the changes.
Abubakar Shuaibu, a local resident, noted that the decision was unpopular among certain community members.
The situation escalated on Sunday morning as residents marched through Gaya, brandishing placards and chanting anti-government slogans. The demonstrators accused the government of political maneuvering and demanded the reinstatement of their emirate, alleging that the dissolution was unjust.
The unrest in Gaya reflects broader discontent in the region as the community grapples with the political ramifications of the law’s repeal.
