As tensions continue to rise within the Kano Emirate, Dr. Muhsin Ibrahim, a Nigerian academic and social commentator, has shared his perspective on how key figures should navigate the current crisis.
Dr. Ibrahim, who teaches Hausa, culture, and film at the University of Cologne’s Institute of African Studies, posted his advice on his verified Facebook account today, urging a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The ongoing tussle involves Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, 14th Emir Muhammad Sanusi II, and the current APC national Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Dr. Ibrahim’s suggestions offer a roadmap for de-escalation and mutual respect.
Advice to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf
“If I were Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, I would approach the Aminu Ado Bayero case more peacefully and professionally. This current situation seems unnecessary and volatile,” Dr. Ibrahim stated.
He emphasized the importance of handling the matter without confrontation, suggesting discreet negotiations to encourage Bayero to vacate his position.
Dr. Ibrahim also recommended withholding salaries from Bayero and loyal palace members if necessary but cautioned against evicting him forcibly.
“I would neither employ nor endorse the use of thugs in this matter. The security and well-being of my state remain my utmost priority,” he stressed.
Advice to Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero
Dr. Ibrahim urged Bayero to step down to maintain his dignity, highlighting the impracticality of forcing an employer to retain him. He also pointed out the potential benefits of avoiding prolonged conflict over the throne.
Advice to Muhammad Sanusi II
Addressing the former Emir, Dr. Ibrahim suggested Sanusi II should decline any offer to return as emir and instead request the reversal of the emirate’s balkanization.
He cited Sanusi’s prominent roles as the Khalifa of the Tijjaniyya Order, a United Nations SDG advocate, a Ph.D. student in the UK, and a respected global economist as reasons to maintain his current engagements.
“Turning down the offer means placing tradition and the institution above personal desires. And posterity would be kinder to me,” Dr. Ibrahim noted.
Advice to Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje
Finally, Dr. Ibrahim called on Dr. Ganduje to refrain from meddling in Kano’s politics, emphasizing the importance of allowing Governor Yusuf to lead independently.
“Despite my desire to influence the state’s affairs, I would acknowledge that my time in charge has passed,” he said, advising Ganduje to prioritize the state’s well-being over personal ambitions.
