The Federal Government has declared its plan to take legal action against the Daily Trust newspaper due to its coverage of the Samoa agreement signing.
The agreement contains provisions mandating underdeveloped and developing nations to endorse the demands of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community for recognition, in exchange for financial and other assistance from advanced societies, triggering various responses.
According to Daily Trust, several religious leaders, activists, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the federal government’s decision to endorse the contentious agreement.
Named after the Pacific Island of Samoa, where it was signed, the agreement has gained traction.
In his initial reaction to the story, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information, stated that any provision in the agreement inconsistent with Nigerian laws shall be invalid.
“It is important to note that Nigeria enacted legislation against same-sex relationships in 2014,” he said.
However, during a media briefing in Abuja on Saturday, Idris described the report as “baseless and sensational.”
“The Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, maintains an open relationship with the media. This aligns with the President’s philosophy as a committed democrat who has spent a lifetime fighting for the entrenchment of democracy and human rights.
“This administration has shown great tolerance for media criticism and guaranteed citizens’ rights to freedom of expression. However, it is disheartening that some elements are abusing this freedom guaranteed by the Government. We are alarmed by the reckless reporting and statements from some media organizations and individuals that undermine national security and stability.
“While we occasionally view and handle such reports as part of the media’s normal work, we now observe a pattern that cannot be dismissed as ordinary journalism.
“We did not anticipate that Daily Trust and those behind it would stoop to such reckless levels as to falsely accuse the government of signing a deal to promote LGBTQ rights. We find such accusations despicable and malicious because they are nowhere reflected in the signed document. Surprisingly, the paper has presented no evidence or provided the alleged agreement to substantiate their claims.
“On the Government’s part, we continue to uphold civility by refraining from taking unilateral or draconian actions. Whereas past administrations have cracked down on the media for lesser infractions, we adhere to the principles of civility and the rule of law.
“The Federal Government is formally lodging a complaint with the NPAN Ombudsman regarding this irresponsible reporting. Furthermore, the Federal Government will pursue legal redress through all lawful means available.
“Once again, the Federal Government reaffirms its friendly stance towards ethical media and free speech. However, we will not tolerate fake news or disinformation that jeopardizes the peace and national security of our country.”
