Senator Kawu Sumaila Proposes Creation of Tiga State: Bill Passes First Reading

Senator Suleiman Abdurrahman Kawu, representing Kano South, has initiated the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Creation of Tiga State Bill, 2024 (SB.523)” in the Nigerian Senate. The bill, aimed at establishing Tiga State from Kano, passed its First Reading on July 10, 2024.

In parallel, Senator Bamidele Michael Opeyemi (Ekiti Central), Senate Leader, highlighted ongoing efforts to amend the Senate’s Standing Orders. He emphasized the importance of these amendments in maintaining the Senate’s efficiency and responsiveness to current needs. “Our goal is to update our legislative processes to better serve the nation,” Senator Opeyemi remarked.

Acknowledging the significance of the amendments, which were last revised in 2023, the Senate aims to enhance Order 8(2) to better align with modern governance requirements and optimize committee functions.

The bill is now set for further readings and scrutiny by Senate committees to assess its viability and potential impact.
