The Kano State Government has announced plans to reopen some girls’ boarding schools that were closed down in 2021, with rehabilitation work currently underway.
Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Girl-Child Education, Hafsat Aminu, made this known at a stakeholders’ workshop on gender-responsive education budgeting.
According to Hafsat, over 20 schools are being rehabilitated to boost access to girls’ education and reduce the number of out-of-school children, with some schools reopening in September.
KANO TIMES gathered that her office has enrolled over 1,000 girls back into school, with efforts ongoing to re-enroll more and provide them with necessary educational materials.
The move is part of the state government’s commitment to girl-child education, under the leadership of Governor Abba Yusuf.
The workshop was organized by the Bridge Connect Africa Initiative (BCAI) under its Bridging Access to Girl Education (BAGE) project, aimed at ensuring access to quality and equitable education for girls in Kano State.
In 2021, the Kano State Government shut down 10 girls’ boarding schools due to security concerns.
