Former Governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has attributed the ongoing emirate crisis in Kano to the involvement of politicians in traditional institutions.
Shekarau, the Sardauna of Kano, stated that political interference has significantly contributed to the unrest in the Kano Emirate.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Shekarau mentioned that the crisis could have been avoided if politicians had not interfered in traditional institutions.
He noted that the tension in the state is driven by political interests rather than concern for the traditional values and structures of the Kano Emirate.
“If the politicians had kept away from all of this, and if the traditional institution had been properly engaged, I don’t see any disagreement,” Shekarau remarked.
He emphasized the need for a harmonious relationship between political leaders and traditional rulers, noting that both play crucial roles in society’s leadership and stability.
The former governor’s comments followed Governor Abba Yusuf’s decision to reinstate Muhammed Sanusi as the Emir of Kano while dethroning Aminu Ado Bayero, the former emir.
This decision came after the repeal of the 2019 Kano State House of Assembly Emirate Law, which had facilitated Ado Bayero’s appointment as emir.
Shekarau expressed hope that peace would return to Kano and that the tension caused by the emirate tussle would subside.
He reiterated the importance of traditional institutions in maintaining societal harmony and called for collaboration between these institutions and political authorities.
“There will be peace. We need the traditional institution. I will not go into that because I belong to the institution,” Shekarau added, highlighting his connection to the traditional structures in the state.
