Vice-President Kashim Shettima emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s primary goal in office is not to amass wealth but to make a lasting impact on Nigeria.
Speaking in Abuja at the launch of the book Navigating the Politics of Universal Education Policies in Nigeria, authored by Modupe Adelabu, a retired professor from Obafemi Awolowo University, Shettima praised Tinubu’s character and leadership.
Shettima described Tinubu as a leader in whom Nigerians can place their trust, noting his modesty and commitment.
He recounted his surprise upon visiting Tinubu’s residence in Bourdillon, expecting grandeur but finding simplicity instead. “My house in Maiduguri is better than his,” Shettima remarked, highlighting Tinubu’s down-to-earth nature.
The Vice-President also mentioned Tinubu’s humility, noting that despite being served a variety of meals, Tinubu chose to eat garri with groundnut.
“He has used only one wristwatch for as long as I’ve known him, and I dress better than him,” Shettima added.
Addressing the nation’s economic challenges, Shettima acknowledged the difficult situation inherited from the previous administration, which he and Tinubu were part of.
He dismissed the criticisms from political opponents, stating that Tinubu had the courage to make tough decisions, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, a move he claims is beginning to stabilize the economy.
Shettima pointed out that Nigeria is now exporting approximately 1.7 million barrels of oil daily, and the naira is showing signs of stabilization against the dollar.
He attributed the current food security crisis to global factors and security challenges in Nigeria’s traditional food-producing regions but assured that these issues would be addressed.
He called on Nigerians to support President Tinubu, whom he described as a leader who has taken bold steps to steer the country towards sustained growth.
