The Acting Executive Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS), Mr. Michael Ango, has outlined his focus on revenue generation and staff welfare.
During a virtual meeting with staff on Thursday, Ango emphasized the connection between staff welfare and revenue performance, urging employees to work towards meeting the agency’s revenue targets.
“My task here is to further deepen Mr. President’s reforms in the fiscal space in Nigeria. As we are all aware, the country is undergoing significant reforms in the economy, the fiscal space, and of course, taxation. One of the important things the President wants to achieve is to ensure that all sub-nationals in Nigeria have fiscal independence and are able to cater for themselves,” he said.
He also discussed the importance of Abuja, stating, “Abuja is an integral part of the nation, and some may argue that it is the most important city in Nigeria. In this regard, the Honourable Minister of FCT has a vision to transform Abuja into a world-class capital city. The FCT-IRS is therefore a very important institution for actualizing the Minister’s vision and one which has the potential to significantly raise revenue for the FCT.”
Ango addressed staff welfare, saying, “We will be looking at what is obtainable in the Service currently, and we will try and improve it to the extent that we can. The good thing about staff welfare is that it is tied to our collection as a Service, and because we are funded by cost of collection.”
He announced plans to improve working tools, enhance training, and support professional development. He also encouraged staff to join professional bodies such as ICAN and CITN.
Ango highlighted the importance of ethical practices within the Service, stating, “Every employee must take deliberate steps to uphold the integrity of the Service. I will not condone any sharp practices in the system,” emphasizing transparency and discouraging revenue leakages.
