Five people lost their lives in a tragic canoe accident in Gantsa town, Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
According to a resident, the incident occurred while the victims were attempting to cross a road submerged by floodwaters in Gantsa.
The canoe capsized, leading to the drowning of all five occupants.
The Jigawa State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident.
He stated, “The incident happened on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at about 1200 hrs. Information from the source disclosed that a canoe carrying five persons was trying to cross the road at Gantsa town, in Buji LGA, where flood affected the road. The canoe capsized and instantly drowned.”
Upon receiving the report, a team of policemen, along with local divers, immediately responded to the scene in an effort to rescue the victims.
The victims were later transported to Gantsa Cottage Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed their deaths. Their bodies were subsequently released to their families for burial.
The deceased were identified as Lurwanu Adamu, Idris Abubakar, Fiddausi Dahiru, Ramla Nura, and Usman Adamu, all residents of Malamawar Gangare, Birnin Kudu LGA.
