The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has condemned the alarming toll of road traffic crashes, which claimed the lives of 2,776 people and left 16,309 others injured between January and July this year.
Speaking during the launch of the FRSC Mobile App and National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS) in Abuja, Akume highlighted that 5,081 people died and 31,874 were injured in road accidents from January to December last year.
Akume emphasized that the mobile app was introduced to raise awareness among drivers and passengers about the causes of road traffic crashes in the country.
He expressed hope that the app would enhance emergency reporting, identify dangerous road spots, provide eyewitness reports, and detect overspeeding. He also noted that motorists could use the app to check the expiration of their licenses and vehicle documents.
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, acknowledged the FRSC’s continuous efforts to improve road safety administration through policy formulation and implementation.
“The FRSC Mobile App is designed to help users stay informed on critical road safety issues, such as excessive speeding, dangerous driving, and verifying vehicle documents,” Mohammed said. He further stressed that the effective use of these features would significantly reduce road accidents and fatalities.
In line with the global trend of technological advancements, Mohammed highlighted the FRSC’s commitment to modernizing its operations.
He added that NACRIS promotes a multi-sectoral approach to crash reporting and data storage, with phase two focusing on developing a digitized crash data template based on insights from phase one.
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC, Abiodun Adeshida, noted that the app, alongside efforts to amend the 2007 FRSC Act, marks the FRSC’s progress towards embracing 21st-century technology to enhance road safety measures.
