The Federal Government has unveiled plans to set up blood collection centres in all 774 local government areas, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to ensure the availability of blood for medical emergencies and transfusions.
Abdullahi Haruna, Head of Media and Publicity at the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), made this announcement in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja.
Prof. Saleh Yuguda, Director-General of NBSA, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the country’s blood shortages, noting that the initiative will play a crucial role in saving lives.
“We are working tirelessly to ensure that blood needs are adequately addressed, and this initiative is a significant step towards achieving that goal,” Yuguda stated.
He further highlighted NBSA’s collaboration with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to establish a robust blood bank at the Corps’ medical facility.
“This collaboration aims to mitigate blood shortages during medical emergencies and provide critical support to sister security agencies,” Yuguda added.
To initiate the project, Yuguda explained that the FCT will be home to strategic blood collection centres located in easily accessible areas.
“This move is expected to increase blood donation rates and ensure a steady supply of blood for medical purposes. The establishment of blood collection centres across Nigeria reflects the government’s dedication to improving the healthcare system. As the project progresses, Nigerians should expect improved access to blood transfusions and better health outcomes,” he said.
In the statement, Deputy Commandant Emeka Okeke of the NSCDC remarked, “This initiative will play a vital role in addressing blood shortages and saving lives.”
