The Kano State Police Command has successfully dismantled a phone theft syndicate, recovering 126 stolen mobile devices, hard drugs, and dangerous weapons.
In a statement, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the command’s spokesperson, described the operation as a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against phone snatching and armed robbery in the state.
He credited the success to directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who instructed police commands nationwide to intensify efforts in dominating public spaces to curb criminal activities.
Acting on these directives, the statement noted that Kano State Commissioner of Police, Salman Garba, held a strategic meeting with the command’s tactical units to develop a comprehensive plan aimed at eradicating crimes such as phone snatching and armed robbery.
Kiyawa revealed that the breakthrough came after a series of targeted operations conducted between September 1-12, 2024, resulting in the arrest of 26 suspected phone thieves and robbers.
In addition to recovering the stolen phones, the police also seized drugs, weapons, and laptops from the suspects.
“The operations were specifically aimed at tackling the ongoing issue of mobile phone snatching and robbery in parts of the state’s metropolis,” Kiyawa said.
He added that the suspects were undergoing further investigation at the command’s Criminal Investigation Department and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The police spokesperson assured that the recovered phones would be returned to their rightful owners after proper identification and verification.
