Students in Kano State, particularly those at Bayero University Kano (BUK), have raised concerns over what they call an “education crisis.”
In a statement by Comrade Abuzaid Salisu Hikima, President of the National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS) at BUK, the students appealed for urgent intervention from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
They cited rising education costs and the inability of many students to afford registration fees, pushing some to the brink of dropping out.
The statement noted that while a few students received government support this year, many remain without assistance, unable to continue their education.
“We wish to remind His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, of the promises made to the people of Kano during his campaign, and more importantly, of the state of emergency on education that he himself declared,” the students said.
The statement also compared Kano’s situation to Jigawa State, where Governor Malam Umar Namadi paid registration fees for all Jigawa students at BUK last year and provided scholarships this year. The Kano students expressed frustration at the lack of similar support from their own government, despite earlier promises.
“It is especially painful to see that billions of Naira have been allocated to a few students studying abroad, while thousands of Kano State students studying within Nigeria—who need only a fraction of that support—are neglected,” the statement read, criticizing the government’s focus on international scholarships while overlooking local students.
The students urged Governor Yusuf to act, warning that continued inaction could lead to more dropouts and harm the government’s education agenda. They called for the immediate release of scholarships and financial aid to ensure students can continue their studies.
“Kano State’s future depends on the actions taken today to support its students,” they stressed.
