Senator Uzor Orji Kalu, representing Abia North, has acknowledged the difficult economic situation in Nigeria, describing the condition of citizens as “not too good.”
In a conversation with reporters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, Kalu urged the federal government to act swiftly to alleviate the suffering.
The former governor of Abia emphasized that no president would want to see his people endure hardship.”Even in my village, everywhere I go—companies, everybody—there is hardship. I appeal to the federal government and the president to bring relief quickly to the people of Nigeria,” he said.
Kalu stressed the urgency of the situation, noting, “He has to do something, not yesterday, but today. He must act as though it should have been done yesterday because the condition of the Nigerian people is not too good. I believe no president in the world, elected by the people, would want his people to suffer.”
He commended President Bola Tinubu for taking bold steps to reform the economy, decisions he said required significant courage.
“We feel that the reformation going on now has not happened in the last 60 years. No president has had the courage to do what President Tinubu is doing now,” Kalu remarked.
Reflecting on the scale of the reforms, he admitted, “It’s about courage. The man is very courageous. If I were president, I might not take the steps he’s taking as quickly. I might come slowly.”
Regarding the potential return of fuel subsidies, Kalu stated that while he is not part of the economic team, this is an issue the president must deliberate with his advisers.”
The decisions he has made are ones no president in the 60 years of the republic has been able to take.”
In addition, Kalu credited the hard work of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders for their victory in the Edo State governorship election, emphasizing the collective effort behind the success.
