The Kano State government has secured a N177.4 billion loan from the French Development Agency to build new waterworks at Tamburawa and improve water distribution in Greater Kano.
The project aims to address the state’s growing demand for drinkable water, driven by rapid population growth.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, announced this during a two-day project coordination and review workshop in Kano.
The event was attended by representatives from Plateau, Enugu, and Ondo states.
The project, part of the National Urban Water Reform initiative, is guaranteed by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
Yusuf highlighted that although the project had experienced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges, it is now set for completion within the next two years.
Engr. Garba Ahmad Bichi, Managing Director of the Kano State Water Board, explained that the project includes the construction of an additional water intake station with a capacity of 250 million litres per day.
This will play a critical role in alleviating water shortages in the city, which continue to worsen due to population growth.
