The Ford Foundation, Luminate Group, MacArthur Foundation, Open Society Foundations, and Carnegie Corporation have launched a $20 million fund to bolster democracy in West Africa.
During the launch in Abuja on Monday, Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation, reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to the aspirations of the people in the region.
“Ford Foundation believes in the vision, aspirations, and dreams of the people of West Africa,” Walker stated. “These dreams are the same as ours here in America — to live peacefully, under the rule of law, with shared prosperity, and opportunities for everyone seeking education, dignity, and a livelihood. For these aspirations to be realized, democracy must deliver. Our work is simply to serve — to serve all of you, the people of West Africa, and ultimately the larger mission.”
Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of funding democracy, citing its role in ensuring inclusivity.
“Funding democracy in West Africa — and I ask why West Africa? I came to the conclusion that it has to be Africa because we don’t have benevolent dictators in West Africa,” said Tuggar, who was represented by Ambassador Olaniyan Olukayode.
“But why fund democracy? Because it is the only system of government that connects the leader and the led, ensuring that your voice is heard and you are not seen as merely receiving a favor.”
Akin Kekere-Ekun, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation, stressed the importance of rebuilding trust in democratic institutions for democracy to thrive.
“As President Tinubu noted at the Summit, regional organizations like ECOWAS play a critical role in defending and restoring democracy in our region,” Kekere-Ekun remarked.
“The West Africa Democracy Fund, by focusing on strengthening civil society and supporting rapid response initiatives, will complement the efforts of these regional bodies and contribute to a more coordinated and effective defense of democratic principles in West Africa.”
