The Nigerian government plans to establish three new military formations in Sokoto State to enhance efforts in combating banditry and other criminal activities in the region.
Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, announced this on Thursday while leading military personnel to reopen the Marnona-Gundumi-Isa road, which had been closed for eight years due to security concerns.
During the visit, Matawalle engaged with community members in Isa, Sabon Birni, and Goronyo Local Government Areas.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the roads were abandoned because of persistent security challenges. Their reopening marks a significant achievement in the ongoing military operations in the Northwest.
Matawalle noted that this was his second visit to Sokoto to oversee efforts against bandits, terrorists, and other criminals in the region.
“As directed by President Bola Tinubu, I have returned to Sokoto State to lead the mission of eradicating bandits and other criminals,” he said.
He also highlighted the military’s progress, stating, “We have achieved successes. Our troops have killed notorious gang leaders and group members in various locations. Relative peace has been restored, particularly in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina States.”
Matawalle expressed confidence in the military’s ability to maintain the momentum, saying, “I am optimistic that our gallant troops will sustain these gains and continue to succeed in the ongoing operations against these criminals.”
