Kwara South Senator, Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, has criticized the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), describing it as one of the most corrupt and compromised government bodies in Nigeria.
Speaking during a debate on the ‘Bill for an Act to Establish the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation,’ Ashiru argued that the NDLEA has failed in its mandate, warranting the need for a new agency dedicated to addressing drug-related issues.
He pointed out that the agency’s shortcomings have contributed to the increasing drug trafficking problem in the country.
“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is corrupt and compromised, hence, I support the creation of the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation,” he said.5The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, allowed the debate to proceed without offering any comments.6The bill was sponsored by Senator Sani Hanga Rufai, representing Kano Central Senatorial District. 7While presenting the general principles of the bill, Rufai explained, “The proposed agency will coordinate and promote drug awareness, prevent substance abuse, and facilitate the rehabilitation of drug users and related matters.”
