The Kano State Government distributed N28.4 million to 62 victims of fire disasters in the state on Friday.
Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf announced this initiative during the distribution ceremony, which aimed to provide assistance to those affected by the disasters.
The Governor represented by Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, who emphasized the government’s commitment to support the victims.
“We are here to console and support the victims and to help ease their pain with this token,” he stated.
Alhaji Isyaku Kubarachi, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), reported that the victims suffered property losses amounting to N835.9 million.
He highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that “out of the 62 victims, seven of them lost their lives, while 11 victims from Dakata small scale benefited from the donation.”
He further explained, “We conducted an assessment to determine the extent of damage and prepared a comprehensive report to the State Government for assistance.”
Kubarachi also acknowledged the contributions of Gov. Kabir-Yusuf, the Nigeria Red Cross, NEMA, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs, and other stakeholders.
Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, NEMA Coordinator for the Kano Territorial Office, urged the public—especially women using firewood and charcoal—to handle fire with care. He advised, “Always switch off your electrical appliances whenever you are going out or going to bed to avoid an inferno.”
Ahmadu Sale, a beneficiary from Tudun Wada Nassarawa Local Government, expressed gratitude on behalf of the victims: “My son, his wife, and five children lost their lives in an inferno caused by an electrical spark sometime in 2024 at about 3:00 a.m.”
