The Defense Headquarters has reported that a Nigerian Naval personnel opened fire in an incident, resulting in the death of a colleague at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Dansadau, where he was stationed as part of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The incident occurred early Friday morning at around 3:12 AM in Katsina State, according to a statement by the Director of Defense Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba.
The suspect, identified as Leading Seaman Akila A., has been disarmed and detained pending investigation.
“An in-depth investigation is currently underway,” said Buba. “Once completed, the case will proceed to a standing court martial to address this breach of discipline.”
Military protocol requires notifying the family of the deceased before publicly releasing the victim’s name.
“The administrative process to inform the family is ongoing,” Buba added, requesting caution in reporting to prevent further distress to the family.
The name of the deceased officer will be made public once the notification procedures are complete.
The incident has brought a somber mood over the Dansadau area, where troops are stationed for counter-insurgency efforts.
