Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Engr. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Expresses Concern Over Ongoing Power Outages Affecting Northern Nigeria.
Senator Kwankwaso released the statement today via his verified X handle, as confirmed by Kano Times.
The outages are attributed to vandalism of the 330kV Shiroro-Kaduna power line, which supplies electricity to Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, and other northeastern states.
Kwankwaso noted the “total darkness” in many areas and the implications for households and businesses. He stated, “It is very disheartening that many parts of Northern Nigeria are in total darkness today.”
He pointed out that the crisis is worsened by rising petrol and diesel costs, which have affected electricity generation and forced factories to cease operations.
“The time this crisis has taken to be addressed underscores the huge deficit of capacity our power sector has to deal with large-scale problems,” he added.
Kwankwaso highlighted the urgent need to reform the power sector to prevent future disruptions and ensure a reliable energy supply.
He urged state governments and private investors to explore alternative energy sources and mentioned successful initiatives in Kano, where the installation of two turbines in the Challawa Gorge and Tiga Dams has reduced reliance on aging power infrastructure.
“We need to exploit the abundant resources available to this country,” he stated, advocating for a concerted effort to secure a sustainable energy future for the region.
