The National Transparency Coalition (NTC) has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to expedite the arrest and prosecution of Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the group, an immediate EFCC investigation into allegations of embezzlement, cronyism, and nepotism against Ganduje is essential to uphold transparency and accountability.
The Coalition’s response followed comments by Oliver Okpala, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Enlightenment to the former Kano State Governor.
In response to a petition against Ganduje, Okpala suggested that the anti-graft agency lacks the authority to arrest or prosecute his principal.
In a statement signed by Comrade Justice Anthony, NTC insisted Ganduje is not above investigation, noting that corruption allegations against him are well-documented.
Anthony stated that Okpala’s claims, asserting Ganduje would not be intimidated by “anti-corruption imposters,” only highlight his inclination toward undemocratic practices.
“We came across the petition by the National Anti-Corruption Alliance (NACA), which outlined numerous allegations against Ganduje,” the statement read.
“NACA’s petition details accusations of bribery and misappropriation against Ganduje, including a $413,000 bribe, N1.38 billion in misappropriated funds, and the diversion of ₦57.43 billion. Ganduje’s refusal to comply with a 2023 summons from the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) further raises concerns.”
Anthony emphasized that “The EFCC’s mandate, as established by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004, includes investigating and prosecuting economic and financial crimes. NACA’s petition falls directly within this mandate, as specified in Section 2(a)(ii) of the EFCC Act 2004.”
“NTC emphasizes that this case transcends party affiliations, focusing solely on Ganduje’s actions as a public servant.”
NTC also called for an immediate investigation into Ganduje’s alleged corrupt practices, alongside his arrest and prosecution for bribery and misappropriation. The Coalition further demanded the recovery of any misappropriated funds and public disclosure of investigative findings.
“The EFCC must demonstrate commitment to anti-corruption without bias. Investigating Ganduje will show that no individual is above the law,” Anthony added.
“NTC calls on Nigerians to support anti-corruption efforts, demanding accountability from leaders. Ganduje’s status does not grant immunity. The EFCC must investigate, reaffirming its dedication to fighting corruption.”
