The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced plans to strengthen its presence in Nigeria’s Southwest region after winning the Ondo State governorship election.
The party’s national chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, stated that the APC aims to expand its influence in the region.
“Our next target now is this geo-political zone, the Southwest geopolitical zone,” Ganduje said, emphasizing the party’s focus on achieving political control in the region.
APC’s Lucky Aiyedatiwa won the Ondo election with 366,781 votes, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Agboola Ajayi, who received 117,845 votes.
Aiyedatiwa, the incumbent governor, previously served as deputy to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who died in December 2023.
With this victory, APC governs four of the six Southwestern states, including Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, and Ondo. The PDP currently holds Osun and Oyo states. Ganduje expressed the party’s intention to win these states.
“You know we are good at hitting the target, that is Osun State and Oyo State. We assure you, we will do what is possible to bring them into the fold,” he said.
