The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has called for increased public awareness on the importance of self-defence in the face of rising insecurity in northern Nigeria.
Speaking during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, ACF Chairman, Mamman Mike Osuman (SAN), highlighted the alarming rate of attacks, kidnappings, and killings in the region.
“The North is currently under siege from various threats, including bandits, terrorists, kidnappers, and unjust treatment. This serves as a clarion call to action for leaders, stakeholders, and citizens to work together to ensure a safer, more prosperous future for all,” Osuman stated in his opening remarks.
The chairman urged northern leaders, including governors, legislators, and traditional rulers, to demonstrate unity and take decisive steps to address domestic and environmental challenges. He also stressed the need to tackle internal crimes perpetrated by locals and combat illegal mining activities in the region.
Osuman emphasized the importance of educating the public on self-preservation, stating, “There is a need for public awareness campaigns to educate our people on the importance of self-defence and preservation. We must develop local strategies to address these issues effectively.”
In his address, the ACF chairman mentioned the formation of the Shekarau-led League of Northern Democrats, convened by elder statesman Dr. Umar Ardo. He noted that the group, which includes former governors, senators, and other prominent figures, aligns with the ACF’s objectives.
“The ACF commends the League of Northern Democrats’ goals. However, we must focus on immediate action and inward reflection rather than solely pursuing long-term political solutions,” Osuman said.
He concluded by reiterating the need for inclusive leadership and collective efforts to address the region’s security challenges, while also prioritizing economic empowerment, education, skills development, infrastructure, and justice.
The meeting highlighted the need for northern leaders and citizens to address the region’s pressing security issues through collaboration and proactive measures.
