The Kano River Irrigation Project in the North-West geopolitical zone is set for comprehensive rehabilitation to boost food production and improve livelihoods.
This was disclosed by Dr. Aishetu Gogo Ndayako, Permanent Secretary of the Ecological Project Office (EPO), during a meeting with a delegation from the Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority in Abuja.
Dr. Ndayako outlined plans for the 22 projects targeting the Tiga, Callaway, and Kafin Chiri Dams, focusing on job creation, food security, and strengthening local economies.
“This is a key project supported by the Ecological Project Office to ensure effective execution. The intervention must succeed as this is the first time the office is directly involved in such an initiative,” she said.
The meeting, facilitated by Nnorom Ugomma on behalf of the Head of Information, discussed objectives, including the rehabilitation of the Kano River Irrigation System, identification of infrastructural needs, strategies for long-term success, and improved stakeholder coordination.
Dr. Ndayako also addressed the dual purpose of providing water for irrigation and livestock while ensuring treated water for domestic use. She stressed the importance of avoiding structural failures to prevent flooding, referencing recent incidents in Maiduguri and other parts of the country.
The rehabilitation effort will start as a pilot scheme in the North-West before being expanded to other geopolitical zones, with the first phase expected to be delivered by the first quarter of next year.
Engr. Bello Gwarzo, Acting Managing Director of the Hadejia-Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, assured the agency’s commitment to completing the projects on schedule and meeting the required standards.
The initiative aims to address food insecurity, promote sustainable development, and support economic growth in the region.
