The special brigade of the Nigerian Army has neutralized scores of Lukurawa bandits and destroyed approximately 22 camps in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Maj.-Gen. Oluyinka Soyele, Theatre Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, disclosed the development to journalists on Friday in Sokoto.
Speaking through Brig. Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Soyele explained that the operation was carried out by a special brigade deployed by the Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa.
He noted that the successful operation was part of an ongoing offensive aimed at wiping out the Lukurawa bandits. “The operation was a follow-up to earlier successes in the ongoing ‘FOREST SANITY III: CHASE LAKURAWAS OUT’ operation,” Soyele said.
The Theatre Commander urged the troops to ensure the complete elimination of the Lukurawa sects, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rules of engagement while safeguarding the lives and property of law-abiding citizens. He also highlighted that the troops selected for the mission were well-trained and equipped to carry out the task.
“This operation is crucial in our efforts to root out the Lukurawa sects from Sokoto and Kebbi states,” Soyele added.
The special operation targeted several forests and enclaves, including Rumji Dutse East of Sarma, Tsauna, Bauni, Malgatawa, Gargao, and Magara forests in Kebbi.
In Sokoto, raids were carried out in villages such as Kaideji, Nakuru, Sama, Sanyinna, Kadidda, Kolo, and Dancha, across Illela, Tangaza, and Binji local government areas.
The operation resulted in the recovery of four rifles, 409 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 94 pieces of 7.62mm special rounds. Several bandit members were neutralized, and the destruction of 22 camps was reported.
Soyele noted that the brigade’s deployment would significantly disrupt the bandits’ activities and restore peace to the affected communities in the North-West.
Before the brigade’s deployment, troops of the 8 Division, under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, had already begun preparatory operations in the affected areas.
