Justice Uthman Mohammed Argungu, a former Supreme Court Justice, has passed away. He died on Saturday night at the age of 89.
The late jurist will be buried today in Argungu, Kebbi State, in accordance with Islamic rites.
Born on February 20, 1935, Justice Argungu served on the Supreme Court for 12 years, from 1993 to 2005.
His educational journey began at the Elementary School in Argungu (1942–1945), followed by Middle School, Sokoto (1946–1950), and the School of Arabic Studies, Kano (1951–1954). He furthered his studies at Bakht El Ruda Institute in Sudan (1958–1960), the Institute of Administration, Zaria (1961–1962), and the University of London (1962–1964). He also attended Gibson College of Law, London (1984), the Council of Legal Education, London, Middle Temple (1965), and the Nigerian Law School (1966).
Justice Argungu began his career as a teacher at Barewa College, Zaria (1960–1961) before transitioning to the judiciary. He served as Chief Registrar of the High Court (1972–1974), a High Court Judge (1974–1978), a Justice of the Court of Appeal (1979–1993), and finally, as a Justice of the Supreme Court (1993–2005).
He was a member of the Middle Temple, London (1965), and the Commonwealth Magistrates Association (1970).
Justice Argungu received several accolades, including the national honor of the Order of the Federal Republic in 1978 and the Kebbi State Merit Award in 1997.
In 2014, he was a member of the Constitutional Conference convened by then-President Goodluck Jonathan.
Justice Argungu’s contributions to Nigeria’s judiciary and legal development remain a lasting legacy.
