Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reinstated routine immunization services to protect the lives of newborns across the state.
The services were neglected for 18 months under the previous administration of Umar Ganduje, a situation Governor Yusuf described as unacceptable.
From the onset of his administration in 2023, Governor Yusuf identified maternal and child health as a priority area, emphasizing the importance of immunization programs.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor directed the immediate restoration of these services, alongside ensuring funding for immunization exercises at both state and federal levels.
Speaking during the launch of the second phase of the 2024 Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNCH) Week, Governor Yusuf reiterated his commitment to addressing maternal and child mortality in Kano.
“Health is our second priority after education. Within this sector, we are focusing on maternal and child health to prevent the avoidable loss of lives among pregnant women and their children,” he said.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, further noted that the 2024 state budget includes allocations for immunization services to ensure the programs are accessible.
“The administration has made provisions in the state budget for immunization services, reflecting Governor Yusuf’s commitment to improving the lives of Kano’s most vulnerable residents,” he explained.
