In honor of the late Dr. Shehi Ali Abubakar for his work in promoting health and philanthropic activities in Kano State and beyond, the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation awarded four health workers at the 4th Late Dr. Shehi Ali Abubakar Annual Award for 2024, held in Kano.
Dr. Musa Muhammad Bello, speaking during the award presentation, expressed his grief over the loss of Dr. Shehi, describing it as a pain that cannot be healed quickly for health professionals worldwide.
Dr. Shehi dedicated much of his life to conducting research, supporting vulnerable groups, especially sickle cell patients, and helping colleagues achieve their goals. This commitment led him to become a consultant radiologist and a pioneer in transcranial Doppler ultrasound, Dr. Musa said.
His contributions to health also led to key roles, including former Chairman of the NMA Kano State Chapter, former President of the Association of Resident Doctors, AKTH, and former board member of the Kano Ultra Modern Specialist Hospitals (KUSH), where he played a crucial role in developing the health sector in Kano State, Dr. Musa added.
The award was intended to both honor Dr. Shehi and inspire young health practitioners to follow his example.
The winners included two Outstanding Resident Doctors of the Year 2024, Dr. Abbas Muhammad Rabiu and Dr. Nuradden Muktar Rabiu, and two Outstanding Radiographers of the Year 2024, Dr. Muhammad Sajo and Dr. A’isha Ahmad Muhammad, all from the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Radiography Unit.
Each winner received a cash prize: ₦100,000 for the Outstanding Resident Doctors and ₦75,000 for the Outstanding Radiographers.
Dr. Fatima Ali, the late Dr. Shehi Ali’s elder sister, thanked Dr. Aminu Magashi, founder of the AMG Foundation, for his efforts in the health sector and for honoring her brother’s legacy.
The event was attended by Dr. Zainab Ibrahim, Dr. Yusuf Lawan, HOD of the Radiology Department at AKTH, Prof. Annas Isma’il, former HOD of Radiology at AKTH, along with family and friends.
