Nigerian investigative journalist, Jaafar Jaafar, has raised concerns about the declining state of the country’s middle class under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, Jaafar criticized the impact of economic policies on this social group.
“Nigeria’s middle class, which was reincarnated by Obasanjo, is endangered, once again, under Tinubu administration. In less than 2 years, Tinubu’s harsh economic policies have apparently decimated this charming social class,” Jaafar wrote.
He pointed out that basic necessities, once affordable to the middle class, are now becoming unattainable luxuries.
“Under Tinubu, regular ‘full tank’—not buying a new or Tokumbo car—has become exclusive to the upper class, while the vanishing middle class struggles with payment of house rent, school fees, electricity bills, etc.,” he added.
Jaafar’s comments come as Nigerians grapple with a rising cost of living, driven by subsidy removal, increased fuel prices, and a weakening naira. Economists and social commentators have warned that the current economic situation could exacerbate inequality and trigger social unrest.
