The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to remove the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto states.
The approval followed a motion sponsored by Opeyemi Bamidele, the Majority Leader, on Wednesday.
The suspended RECs are Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto). Tinubu sought the Senate’s approval to terminate their appointments due to alleged misconduct.
While presenting the motion, Bamidele stated that the president’s request aligns with Section 157(1) of the Constitution.
During the debate, Abba Moro, the Minority Leader, emphasized that the dismissal of these appointees would serve as a warning to others in public office. “This administration has promised Nigerians that it will fight corruption, so for this reason, the termination will serve as a deterrent to those in public service,” he remarked.
Tahir Monguno, the Chief Whip, added that with 91 senators present at the session, the Senate had the necessary two-thirds majority to approve the request.
“The philosophical cornerstone of this motion is to reinforce Section 157(1) of the Constitution. We have been called upon to discharge our duties to protect the integrity of public offices,” he said.
The motion was passed following a voice vote conducted by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
