Amnesty International has condemned the trial of the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf, describing the proceedings as politically motivated and aimed at suppressing his criticism of the Nigerian government.
In a statement, the organization noted, “Amnesty International is deeply concerned about what appears to be the targeting of Prof. Usman Yusuf solely for his criticism of the Nigerian government. His trial seems to be politically motivated.”
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently charged Prof. Yusuf with embezzlement, conferring undue advantage, and committing fraud amounting to N90,439,178.00.
Amnesty International has urged Nigerian authorities to ensure fairness and justice in the case.
“The Nigerian authorities must stop weaponizing the fight against corruption to harass and intimidate dissenting voices and instead uphold the rule of law and the human rights of everyone in the country,” the statement continued.
The organization emphasized the importance of protecting Prof. Yusuf’s rights to liberty and a fair hearing, cautioning against the misuse of anti-corruption efforts.
“The fight against corruption must not be skewed toward silencing critical voices. Instead of investing vainly in desperate attempts to punish peaceful dissent, the Nigerian government should listen to critics and address the growing cases of insecurity, corruption, and mismanagement in the country,” Amnesty International added.
