A Federal High Court in Kano State on Monday sentenced a 50-year-old security guard, Abubakar Muhammad, to seven years in prison for sexually exploiting his 14-year-old stepdaughter.
Muhammad, who resides in Wailari Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano, was convicted on a count charge of sexual exploitation after pleading guilty.
The Presiding Judge, Justice S.M. Shu’aibu, ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently sentenced the defendant to seven years in prison without the option of a fine.
Earlier, Mr. Abdullahi Babale, the Prosecutor and Kano State Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), informed the court that Muhammad committed the offense in Wailari Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State on Jan. 24, 2025.
He stated that Muhammad lured his 14-year-old stepdaughter into his wife’s room at Wailari Quarters when the woman traveled to Jigawa and sexually exploited her.
He added that the defendant had carnal knowledge of the stepdaughter on four different occasions and gave her N2,000 to add to her soya beans cake business.
Babale presented two exhibits, including the defendant’s confessional statement and the girl’s testimony, to the court to prove his case.
He explained that the offense contravened the provisions of Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, punishable under Section 26(1) of the TIP Act 2015.
The Defense Counsel, Mr. I. I. Umar, pleaded for leniency on behalf of the convict.
