Electricity is an essential requirement for academic institutions, powering learning, research, and the day-to-day activities of students. Unfortunately, students at Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, are grappling with severe challenges due to an unreliable power supply. Â
Currently, electricity in the hostels is available only after Maghrib, when the generator is turned on. However, with one of the generators breaking down, the situation has deteriorated further, leaving some hostels without power for days. This has forced students to move between hostels just to charge their phones and laptops, adding unnecessary stress and inconvenience to their lives.
The lack of consistent electricity has negatively impacted students’ academic performance. In today’s digital era, where online resources, e-books, and electronic assignments are critical, students find it challenging to keep up with their coursework. Those affected by power outages struggle to study at night, conduct research, or submit assignments on time, putting them at a significant disadvantage compared to their peers in institutions with stable power.
Ensuring a reliable power supply would not only foster academic excellence but also enhance students’ well-being. The psychological and physical toll caused by the electricity crisis is a serious concern. Instead of focusing on their studies and personal growth, students waste valuable time moving from one hostel to another in search of power. This daily struggle affects their morale, mental health, and overall university experience. A steady power source would alleviate these frustrations, enabling students to focus fully on their education.
A practical and sustainable solution to this crisis lies in the adoption of solar energy. Unlike generators that rely on costly and often scarce fuel, solar power is a renewable and dependable source of electricity. With proper investment, solar panels can provide a consistent energy supply for the hostels, freeing students from the burden of unpredictable outages.
Universities and institutions worldwide have successfully transitioned to solar energy, demonstrating its efficiency and long-term benefits. One of the major advantages of solar power is its cost-effectiveness. Although the initial installation requires significant investment, it eliminates recurring expenses for fuel and generator maintenance. Over time, the savings can be redirected toward improving hostel facilities, internet access, and other academic resources, ultimately benefiting students.
Moreover, solar energy is environmentally friendly and aligns with global sustainability goals. Unlike fossil fuel-powered generators that emit harmful gases contributing to air pollution and climate change, solar power is clean and renewable. By adopting solar energy, Al-Istiqama University can position itself as an eco-conscious institution that prioritizes sustainable development while creating a better learning environment for its students.
In conclusion, the challenges posed by the erratic power supply at Al-Istiqama University demand urgent attention. The university administration, in collaboration with stakeholders, should explore partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and private investors to solarize hostels and academic buildings. Students deserve a stable and reliable power supply to support their education, security, and overall well-being. Solar energy is the most viable and sustainable solution, and the time to act is now.
