The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has pledged to implement the recommendations of the committee that investigated the August 1, 2024, End Bad Governance protest, which claimed 10 lives and caused property destruction estimated at over ₦11 billion.
Governor Yusuf made this commitment while receiving the committee’s report from its chairman, Justice Lawan Wada (rtd.), during the 25th Kano State Executive Council meeting at the Government House on Monday.
The protest, which escalated into violence, resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals, left seven others critically injured, and caused extensive damage to public and private properties across Kano State.
“This is a tragic loss for the people of Kano. The destruction of lives and properties is unacceptable, and our administration will take appropriate action to ensure justice is served,” Yusuf stated.
The governor highlighted that his administration ensured the committee carried out its six-month investigation independently, without interference.
“I have confidence in the integrity and professionalism of the committee members. They were selected based on merit, and I am optimistic that they have done their job without bias,” he added.
Justice Wada, in his presentation of the report, noted that the committee visited all affected areas and engaged with stakeholders to compile a thorough account of the protest’s impact.
“We engaged with victims, security agencies, and eyewitnesses to ensure a comprehensive report. The loss of lives and destruction recorded is unfortunate, and we have recommended measures to prevent future occurrences,” Wada said.
Governor Yusuf commended the committee for its diligence and reassured the public that its recommendations would be implemented to prevent future violence.
“The government will take action to ensure such incidents do not reoccur. Those who sponsor violence and destruction must face the consequences,” Yusuf affirmed.
The release of the report and the government’s assurance of its implementation signal a critical step toward justice and accountability in Kano State.
