The crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has escalated as stakeholders oppose an alleged move by the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to extend the tenure of State Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas for a fourth term.
The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, warned that any attempt to retain Abbas as chairman could cause further problems for the party.
“We will not take it lightly if the current chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, is imposed on us for a fourth term. This will surely result in our immediate defection from the party,” Atta said during a stakeholders’ meeting in Kano on Saturday.
He warned that keeping Abbas in office could have serious consequences for the APC in the 2027 elections.
“We are saying it loud and clear—I swear, if Abdullahi Abbas is given another chance, all of us will decamp from the party, and APC will crash and lose in 2027. This is my message to anybody who cares to listen,” he said.
Atta blamed the party’s loss in the 2023 Kano governorship election on what he called the “arrogant and misguided disposition” of Abbas.
“The anti-God remarks of Abdullahi Abbas played a major role in truncating our victory in 2023. Up till today, he has not changed. If he is given another chance, everyone should consider the party as good as losing in 2027,” Atta added.
The crisis is linked to a power struggle within the APC, with Ganduje reportedly pushing for Abbas’s reappointment to weaken the chances of Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, in his rumored bid for the 2027 governorship ticket.
Party insiders say the dispute could deepen divisions within the Kano APC ahead of the next elections.
