The Sarkin Sasa of Ibadan, Oyo State, and Sardaunan Yamma, Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin Katsina, died at the age of 125. His son, Alhaji Kasim Ado Yaro, announced his passing on Saturday, March 1.
He served as the chairman of the Council of Arewa Traditional Rulers in Nigeria’s 17 southern states until his death.
Alhaji Kasim Ado Yaro described his father as “a pillar of strength and a guiding light for many.” He added, “Baba lived a life dedicated to peace, justice, and the service of humanity. His legacy will continue to inspire us.”
Traditional rulers and associates expressed their condolences. Alhaji Umaru Balarabe said, “He was a man of humility and wisdom, always advocating for good governance and the welfare of his people. His leadership will be sorely missed.”
Malam Musa Bello, a member of his council, stated, “His voice was always for fairness and unity. He believed in leadership that served the people, not just ruled them.”
Dr. Yunus Akintunde, the senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, expressed his condolences to the family of the Sarkin Sasa of Ibadan and the Hausa community over the death of Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin Katsina.
In a release made available to the media by Kunle Olatunji, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Senator Yunus Akintunde, he expressed his heartfelt condolences on the passing of the notable traditional ruler.
“He was both a political and spiritual leader to several of us, endowed with unequaled leadership virtues and a very peaceful disposition. We will miss his staunch support, guidance, good nature, and excellent rapport.”
“My heartfelt condolences go to his immediate family members, his subjects, and the Hausa communities across the country, even those beyond the areas of traditional rulership jurisdiction.”
“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Fridaus.”
He is survived by his children and grandchildren. The family will announce funeral arrangements.
