Today, I am writing yet another celebratory tribute to one of our own. Recently, penning tributes had taken a backseat, but 2025 feels compelling. Nurses consistently blaze trails. We had the first inaugural Kano Nurses and Midwives’ Connect, which was coupled with the emergence of an elderly colleague who rose to the prestigious rank of a certified global nurse consultant just a few days later.
Today, I’m writing in honor of Nafisa Nura, RN, the best graduating student in General Nursing, November 2023. However, her accomplishment received the recognition of an ‘unsung hero’.
I didn’t know Nafisa from Adam, but I reached out to congratulate her and informed her of my plan to write in celebration of her success — to which she responded with indifference. A cacophony of warnings echoed within me that she might object to this tribute, as it’s clear that Nafisa is not one for the spotlight or razzmatazz.
Her accomplishment as the best graduating nursing student in Nigeria is no coincidence. She worked for it, and she earned it. It is a testament to her hard work, resilience, and perseverance.
As the pioneer overall best graduate, she brought fame and respect to the good people of Kano State. She inspires awe and admiration that is worthy of emulation among her peers and future prospects. Additionally, Nafisa’s success demonstrates the transformative impact of nursing education in the state.
However, since 2023, Nafisa has faced a seemingly endless delay. Despite her distinguished achievement, she is yet to receive a job appointment from the state government. Nafisa has brought distinction and honor to Kano State in nursing education. Her success will continue to inspire generations. Therefore, we urge the government to absorb Nafisa into service and sponsor her to pursue advanced qualifications — as both a reward for her achievement and a motivation for aspiring minds.
Congratulations to our professional colleagues. You have achieved the extraordinary. We look forward to celebrating more of your successes.
