Over 1,200 loyalists of Senator Kawu Sumaila have returned to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), declaring their support for the political movement led by former Kano State Governor and NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The defectors—1,230 in number—are from Albasu and Sumaila Local Government Areas in Kano South Senatorial District. They were previously affiliated with the Waraka political group under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their homecoming was made public during a political gathering on Sunday, attended by top NNPP stakeholders.
According to a statement by the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Kano State Governor, Sanusi Bature, the event marked a significant boost for the party’s grassroots structure in southern Kano.
Addressing the crowd, Kwankwaso welcomed the defectors warmly, stating that the NNPP stands for ideology-driven politics, not transactional loyalty.
“I am always happy to receive people who believe in our movement, not because of financial incentives, but because of our collective vision for a better Nigeria. This is politics of ideology, not politics of the highest bidder,” he said.
Representing the returnees, Jamilu Zamba and Maryam Romo pledged their renewed allegiance to the NNPP and applauded Kwankwaso’s leadership.
“We have realised that this is where our political future lies,” Zamba declared, while both he and Romo commended Kwankwaso for his integrity, consistency, and grassroots commitment.
