The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has been accused of gross negligence following the death of a young mother, Amina Muhammad, at the facility on Sunday.
The expectant mother died due to complications from a Caesarean section (CS), which her family attributed to negligence, unprofessional conduct, and a poorly equipped unit within the hospital.
According to information provided by an elder sister (name withheld), Amina’s CS was initially delayed over the provision of blood pints in case a transfusion became necessary. Her condition reportedly worsened after the procedure, ultimately leading to her death.
“She checked into the hospital by herself last Friday but was unnecessarily delayed over issues of blood. A hospital like AKTH should have a standard blood bank,” the sister said.
“After all the rigmarole, she was later operated on without any transfusion. Her condition worsened with breathing difficulties. She was placed on oxygen using a manual machine and later connected to an oxygen concentrator, but there was no electricity to power the device.”
“Imagine a hospital like AKTH with no stable alternative power supply. We experienced unbearable heat due to the harsh weather—imagine what the sick are going through.”
“They were inconsistent, unprofessional, and showed no empathy whatsoever. We pleaded for her to be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for better attention, but they refused. Instead, she was moved back into the labour room.”
“We are devastated and have informed human rights lawyers about this already,” she added.
When contacted, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Haj. Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, said she had forwarded the deceased’s file to the hospital management for review.
“I have personally submitted the late woman’s file records to the management. They will review everything and find out who is at fault or what went wrong, and the public will be duly informed about our
findings,” she said.
