In what appears to be a fresh setback for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Mustapha Hamza Buhari Bakwana has resigned as Senior Legislative Aide to the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibril, and declared his allegiance to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
Bakwana, a known political ally of APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, confirmed his defection on Wednesday in Kano, citing neglect and frustration within the APC.
“After years of loyalty and sacrifice, we have nothing to show for it,” he said while addressing supporters. “We have decided to join the NNPP because Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso is a strong leader who knows politics well and, more importantly, never betrays his people.”
A former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to Ganduje during his time as governor, Bakwana was widely regarded as one of the former governor’s closest political allies in the Northwest. His exit from the APC is seen as a blow to the party’s ground structure in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development comes amid persistent internal friction in the APC, with factions loyal to Ganduje and others aligning with the state’s current leadership jostling for control.
