The Yobe State government has ordered the immediate closure of three markets in Gujba Local Government Area following fears of a possible terrorist attack.
The affected markets are located in Katarko, Kukareta, and Buni Yadi towns.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), the state said the shutdown was for “operational reasons” to allow security forces to carry out what he described as targeted operations against insurgents.
“The decision was taken for operational reasons,” Abdulsalam said. “This will enable security forces to carry out targeted engagements to curb insurgency.”
He admitted the shutdown would affect the daily lives of residents who depend on the markets for their livelihoods but appealed for public cooperation.
“We understand the impact this may have on the livelihood of citizens,” he said. “We urge the public to cooperate with security agencies to bring lasting peace in the region.”
Abdulsalam added that the markets would reopen once security objectives are met.
