A newly married man, Usman Ali, has taken his wife, Maryam, to a Sharia Court in Jaba, located in the Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, accusing her of stealing three mobile phones valued at ₦65,000.
In her response before the court, Maryam denied the accusation. She told the judge that she ran away from their home in Abuja to Kano to escape what she described as repeated beatings by her husband.
She said she had to seek refuge at her parents’ house.
Usman also accused three of Maryam’s friends of negatively influencing her and encouraging what he called “wayward behaviour.”
The judge, Ustaz Rabiu Yahaya, granted Maryam bail and adjourned the case to July 15.
