The federal government has declared 16 years as the official and non-negotiable minimum age for admission into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this known on Tuesday during the opening of the 2024 Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja.
According to him, “The minimum age now approved for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria is 16 years. That position is final and not open for negotiation.”
He also issued a strong warning to heads of institutions, stating that any admission carried out outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) would be considered illegal, and culprits would face legal consequences.
“Let me make it clear that any institution conducting admissions outside CAPS is violating federal policy. Anyone found guilty will be prosecuted,” Alausa said.
He added that the Ministry of Education will not tolerate admission racketeering or manipulation of student data by tertiary institutions.
