The Kano State Shari’ah Commission has raised alarm over the rise in phone snatching incidents across the state and has urged the police to join forces in confronting the trend head-on.
During a visit to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim A. Bakori, the Chairman of the Commission, Sheikh Abbas Abubakar Daneji, made it clear that addressing phone theft requires collective effort—especially from parents.
“This unfortunate incident is increasing by the day,” Sheikh Daneji said. “The Commission has a vital role to play in fighting this menace, but we cannot succeed without the support of all stakeholders, especially parents and members of the community.”
He didn’t mince words about what he sees as parental failure. “I am calling on parents to wake up from slumber and take full responsibility of guiding their children on how to behave properly, just as parents did in the past in our society.”
While emphasizing that the Commission’s work focuses on religious education, Sheikh Daneji said the involvement of security agencies is necessary to deal with offenders.
“Our duty is to inform people about what is right and wrong from a religious perspective. We need the police and other agencies who have the authority to enforce the law,” he said.
The Chairman also mentioned a recent visit to the Chief Judge of Kano State, where discussions included the need to eliminate the option of fines for those convicted of phone robbery.
According to him, “The Judiciary expressed readiness to work with any group committed to ending phone robbery.”
Responding to the concerns, CP Ibrahim Bakori described the visit as timely and assured the delegation of continued collaboration with relevant bodies to tackle crime in the state.
