92-Year-Old Paul Biya Declares Candidacy for 8th Term in Cameroon

President Paul Biya on Sunday declared that he would seek an eighth term in office ahead of Cameroon’s October presidential election.

Mr. Biya, 92, announced his reelection bid in a post on X, which, if successful, would see him remain in power for over four decades.

“I am a candidate for the 12 October 2025 presidential election. Rest assured that my determination to serve you is commensurate with the serious challenges facing us,” Mr. Biya said. “Together, there are no challenges we cannot meet. The best is still to come.”

Mr. Biya has served as Cameroon’s president since 1982, when he assumed office as the country’s second president.

As the leader of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, Mr. Biya is his party’s candidate for the upcoming election.
