The Federal Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, on Monday.
Ajani said the declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government.
According to Tunji-Ojo, the decision follows the seven days of national mourning earlier declared by President Bola Tinubu after Buhari’s death.
“The public holiday is in recognition of President Muhammadu Buhari’s service to Nigeria, his role in shaping the country’s democratic path, and the legacy he left behind,” Tunji-Ojo said.
He described Buhari as a leader who served with “dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation.”
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the minister added.
He urged Nigerians to use the day to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and unity — ideals the late President championed.
Tunji-Ojo also extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
